- The algorithm controls the lighting, the position and the size of the face.
- It has been proven a 26 percent improvement in the ‘selfies’ taken with the application.
Scientists from the University of Waterloo (Canada) have developed an application for phones ‘smartphone’ that helps the people to become the “best” ‘selfies’ or self portraits thanks to an algorithm that directs the user to place the camera in the “best position possible”, as reported by the researchers.
To develop the application, driven by a group of researchers led by professor of computer science of the academic institution Dan Vogel, the scientists took “hundreds of selfies virtual” and wrote the code to control the smartphone’s camera and the illumination generated by the computer. This allowed to explore “various principles of composition”, including the direction of illumination and the position and size of the face.
Later, through surveys on the Internet, the researchers were “thousands of people” who voted for the photos that they considered best. After the selection of the portraits, modeled the patterns of the results of the votes and they developed an algorithm that could guide people to take the best selfie.
once developed, the algorithm, researchers were real people that did ‘selfies’, with an standard camera, and an application-driven algorithm. On the basis of more ratings online, they found a 26 percent improvement in selfies taken with the application of the scientists.
“This is just the beginning of what we can do,” said Vogel, the time that has been pointed out that it can “expand the variables to include other aspects such as the hairstyle, types of smile or even the suit that you wear”.
