Fortunately, there are very economical and ecological ways to get hold of a soil rich in fertilizer and nutrients, which will serve as the basis for our plants. A simple way is to start by separating in our garbage the organic remains of the inorganic, that is, place in our place destined for the trash can two bins, one for paper, plastic and anything that is not of natural origin; the other, for organic remains, understand the plant remains.
Once we have obtained some of these remains (pieces of vegetables, tubers or fruits) we will proceed to order a plastic container, to which we will open (if not present them) a few small holes in the bottom and sides, in order to facilitate the the decomposition process necessary for the manufacture of our fertilizer.
Next we will take a large bag with which to line the inside of the container, taking into account that in the bag must protrude quite a bit from the edge of our container. In the background, we will first place some leaves, branches and even sawdust (wood chip) in order to provide our fertilizer with an important source of carbon.
On this layer, we will place the remains of our organic products: banana shells, fruit peels, seeds, vegetable pieces, potato shells. It is advisable to also add to the preparation traces of tea (tea bags) or the erasure of the coffee, so that they provide to our organic fertilizer a good amount of nitrogen.
It is also recommended not to add to fertilizer remains of chicken, meat, fish, seafood or eggs, since the decomposition of these will produce very bad odors. Likewise, it is advised not to add many citrus fruits, as they can generate a lot of acidity in our fertilizer, seeing us in the need to add eggshells, in order to attenuate the acidity level of our preparation.
We can also add traces of wood ash, or charcoal. Similarly, we can acquire from some garden some paid soil, in order to provide more nutrients to our preparation. Then we will fill three-quarters of the container with our preparation, after which we will close our bag, preventing the future organic fertilizer from getting wet with the rain.
After a week, we will proceed to remove our mixture with a shovel. Action that we will take once a week, in order to provide the necessary conditions for oxygenation. Also, it is recommended to add some water, to keep the fertilizer moist. In the following days, we will be able to appreciate how the preparation begins to heat up, due to the organic decomposition process. After four weeks of rest (together with our weekly handling and irrigation) we will be able to appreciate how the preparation decreases its size.
At twelve weeks, we will have in our container a mixture of lumpy, moist and rich soil, rich in nutrients, with which we can fill the pots or the space where we go to plant our spices or plants. If after the planting process we have left enough fertilizer, it can continue to feed on organic remains, so that we always have a nutritious soil ready for our seeds.
