In general, it is known as History to the Succession of Facts, which being real or imaginary, are narrated continuously, finding in them a meaning or plot. Therefore, history can also be seen as the food or axis of literary narratives or works, which then arise with the intention of telling stories, as was the case in the times when oral tradition prevailed.
However, when we talk about history, it is actually being referenced to scientific discipline, which through investigative and methodological processes, gives itself to study the past facts of Humanity, in order to be able to know them, record them, analyze and relate them, as a way of knowing where man comes from, where he is, and even trying to predict which destination he is heading towards.
Etymology of the word History
Likewise, it may be of great importance to repair the etymology of the word History, which – as indicated by the different sources – determined from the Greek word ἱστορία, a word that can be translated literally as information or can investigate, a situation that does then that the concept History is linked even from its etymological sense with the academic.
Technique, Theory and Facts
However, specialists in the disciplinary area known as History point out the importance of distinguishing between three basic concepts, which usually tend to be confused, and which need to be known, since even when they are related, in fact each of them points to a different aspect of the discipline known as History, and they can be described as follows:
- Historiography: first of all, reference should be made to the concept of Historiography, which has basically been explained by the different sources as the set of methods and procedures by which historians undertake the different research and studies on past events. Consequently, Historiography will determine the scientific method to follow. Likewise, some authors also call Historiography to the written production of historians.
- Historiographic: this should also refer to historiology, which can be explained as the Theory of History, since it will be made up of the different theories, explanations, analyses and conclusions, which arise based on the study of past events, which occurred in a specific time or civilization, or on the contrary in humanity in general.
- Historiologic: finally history will be the very set of events that have occurred in the past of a civilization. In this way, they constitute the very subject of study of the eponymous discipline, as well as the one on which historiographic techniques will be applied, in order to achieve results or historiological advances.
What History Is For
While there are many opinions and theories regarding the relevance and usefulness of history as a discipline, in general most sources agree that it fulfills the role of making it possible for humans to know its position within the species to the one that belongs, as well as the origin of it, that is, the events that make up its existence.
On the other hand, some authors are emphatically in pointing out that as a cluster of events, history serves to see how in the past certain events triggered specific consequences, so then the study of history by a civilization makes it able to read in the past the mistakes and triumphs, so that we can understand its present, but above all avoid or promote certain results in its future.
