Ornitorrin cousco curiosities

This tender and funny animal that is sometimes mistaken for a duck but that has a sea lion body is perhaps one of the most enigmatic animals as it is a semi-aquatic mammal that after being discovered in 1799 by a team of scientists occupies an import place anteane in the history of universal wildlife.

The scientific name of the Ornitorrinco is ‘Ornithorhynchus anatinus’ and literally means ‘animal with a bird’s snout and duck appearance’.

The platypus lays eggs despite being mammals and possesses like other mammals, mammary glands; this makes it an extremely special specimen. Its beak is similar to that of a duck and is covered with a peculiar fur, despite possessing warm blood, its skeleton is very similar to the reptile, which is a cold-blooded animal.

They have abazones, which are leather pockets, located on either side of the mouth cavity. This feature is possessed only by rodents and used to store food and then eat it. So the platypus also has some rodent.

Apparently, these animals that we usually see in photos and that seem a huge size, are quite a hoax, because the platypus are smaller in size than that of a homecat; males reach between 41 and 62 centimeters along and weigh only 3 kilos.

The tail of the platypus is of great similarities to that of beavers; their hind legs, they resemble those of otters, which are usually palmed and serve as rudders to be able to move in the water; and on the ground, they use them to dig.

While underwater, platypus only leave their beak in contact with the surface of the water, but they tend to close their eyes, ears and nose, so the beak is the only organ left in contact with the outside and this one , in turn, it serves them to locate brief energy fumes or electromagnetic fields, generated by the movements coming from their prey.

Males store on their hind legs a powerful poison that can cause terrible pain and severe inflammation in their victims. The home of these mysterious beings is usually built by themselves and can dig burrows up to 30 meters deep. These magnificent animals are a gift from nature.
