For the first time, the technology giant Google pinned one of their submarine cables in the territory Spanish. The Grace Hopper, named in honor of the scientific computing and in the u.s. military, connect the united States and the United Kingdom passing by Spain.
Today, the 98% of the international traffic of internet is transported around the world by submarine cables. This new cable, says Google, will provide “a better resistance to the network that supports the company’s products and consumption of the company.”
“A vast network of submarine cables that cross the ocean makes it possible to share, search, send and receive information around the world to the speed of light”, says the multinational in a statement.
The cable will connect the u.s. city Shirley with the uk Bude passing Bilbao. Grace Hopper joins the other private submarine cables Google -Curie, Dunant and Equiano – to “connect remote continents along the bottom of the ocean”.
once commissioned, this cable will be one of the first to connect EE. UU. and United Kingdom since 2003, increasing the capacity in this “crowded crossroads global” and feeding Google services such as Meet, Gmail, and Google Cloud.
The cable, Grace Hopper will be equipped with 16 pairs of fibers (32-fiber), “a significant upgrade” of the infrastructure of the internet that connects US. UU. with Europe. Earlier this year a contract was signed to build the cable with the provider of submarine cable Eatontown, NJ, SubCom, and the project is expected to be completed in 2022.
