LG Optimus G: Analysis and user experience

While today announces the new LG Optimus GK with 5 “screen and quad-core processor 1.7 GHz in Korea and the United States start enjoying the Optimus G Pro that rises to the 5.5”, the rest of the world we just got the Optimus G, a terminal that is already on sale in other areas since last year.

Virtually all manufacturers base their sales in the midrange, but in this world of ever smartphone have to have a flagship, one representing high-end brand and an image of quality and superiority. A LG touch him now compete against the Samsung Galaxy S 4, the Sony Xperia Z, HTC One and a few other very high quality terminals with a device that late. To top it off, we’re talking about a phone like the Nexus 4, with its two main differences Camera and sound, but for a much higher price.

Right here is the key to the LG Optimus G. How to compete against such great phones? Offering a product at a lower price. Perhaps in the free market the difference is not huge, but when we enter the world of the operator, LG’s strategy will be to find the best possible space, the Optimus G offering the cheapest way possible, and making this the high-end terminal more affordable. It is your best bet.

Materials and Design

This is perhaps, at least in my opinion, highlights the point that unless the Optimus G. Its design is not too worked, and we must recognize that here the manufacturers are starting to put the batteries. Take for example HTC, who had never left his line too, and the One have given a huge leap.

Sony also noted here that while still finding his way, always surprising us with things interesting. The Xperia Z is simple, but very attractive. In fact a very important feature shared with the Optimus G, is that both have glass both front and back, but the look of the LG is much less premium than the Xperia Z. Lack here a small step forward who may be beginning to the Optimus G Pro, but we miss here.

However, the phone feels tough and sturdy in the hand, very nice in this regard . As with the Nexus 4, we have a pattern as a hologram on the back, yes it adds an extra point in the design section, making it much more attractive than just a monochrome back.

This is a unibody terminal, so we can not easily remove the housing in case you want to change the battery for an emergency. Instead, if we want to change because it has been damaged after a while using it, we have two screws that give us access to the inside.

The rear glass is protected with a small flange that prevents this is always in contact with the flat surfaces on which we support, thus freeing the small scratches that are decorating the backs of glass terminals. Also this prevents the speaker cover and do not hear when they call us or we get a notification, which is very annoying in the Nexus 4.

At the top we find the jack connector 3.5 “headphone, in the top left button on, in my opinion the best position (at least for right), in which many try to innovate fully mistaking the microUSB connector for charger and to connect to the computer is in the bottom, and Sound button in the upper right side.

Interface LG

A lime and sand at the interface of LG. We found very interesting and useful things that make our lives easier, but on the other hand there are things that leave much to be desired.

We start with the less good, to give then step to the most interesting and noteworthy. The problem with this interface is that toy too, by describing it in some way. It is a bit dated and could use either a facelift, especially in the application menu. Much less is annoying, and considering that it is the most fluid I’ve tried on Android, the thing is balanced, but adapt it and make it something more modern would give a total change to this terminal.

Entering the features that we can highlight a complete notification bar. The first time we see is messy and overloaded, but once used it twice can not live without it. It is very complete, and we do not lack anything, with shortcuts everywhere to use the phone as simple as possible.

The top are shortcuts to functions and settings of the phone, where we found everything and we can also edit to remove, add or change the order. This is one of the things I use the phone, and I really would love to see this in many other brands (Samsung for example has it, but this is something else entirely).

After this bar adjustments have shortcuts to applications QSlide, a function that allows you to open applications like calculator, notes, calendar, browser or even as floating widget can control the transparency of these in order to continue using your phone while in the foreground. Very practical and easy to use.

Finally in the notification bar have a quick brightness control to adjust the brightness of the screen and under the bar Android native notifications, which are normally used .

We have to emphasize QickMemo within the interface of LG as it is an application that the use is essential. It’s just a notes app, but it is so well integrated you just using it for everything. What it does is take a screenshot of what we are doing and we can add text, shapes, arrows, etc.., Then share. We can also make a capture, target something and then continue using the phone seeing only what we have said. This is useful for example if you want to point the phone to a restaurant to visit their website and then browse the net and from there call.

We can not say that the LG Optimus G a terminal case underpowered. On the contrary, this is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz quad-core with 2GB of RAM, a combination that has proven to work like a charm in both this phone and the Nexus 4.

The Optimus G flies, and Android phones is more fluid than we can find. What I mean is that in normal use, that after all is what we do most of the time, navigating through phone functions, entering the browser, making a call or checking email, this phone has amazing response time, and the feeling is to be using a unique device. The bowels of the Optimus G are a perfect combination of performance and speed.

Move When powerful games is not troubled, and processing graphic Adreno 320 GPU shows again that it is capable almost everything. In this sense the problems are non-existent, very happy with this paragraph.

Here’s the Quadrant test results:

The LG Optimus G screen is a WXGA resolution LCD display of 4.7 “. Plus features IPS technology, with all its drawbacks and benefits, but that ultimately is catching on as the favorite for manufacturers, and enjoying it a lot on the market.

Remarkable is also the technology Zerogap , that while LG is not the first manufacturer to use it, we must name because it is the kind that yes it shows. When making a phone screen, enter the touch panel and the protective glass end introduced secondary layers. What makes Zerogap is to remove everything that is between them and thus leave them in direct contact, making touch usage much more sensitive and therefore more responsive. It seems that the phone is faster, which is what we discussed in the section of the interface.

With a resolution of 768 x 1280 pixels on a screen 4.7 “get a pixel density by inch 318 PPI, which is not bad but quite far from current pointers terminals, one of the biggest differences we find as we go to a phone that was already presented last year.

comparison table screen densities would look like:

  • HTC One: 469 PPI
  • Sony Xperia Z: 441 PPI
  • Samsung Galaxy S 4: 441 PPI
  • Sony Xperia S: 342 PPI
  • Apple iPhone 5: 326 PPI
  • Sony Xperia T: 323 PPI
  • LG Optimus G: 318 PPI
  • HTC One X: 312 PPI
  • Samsung Galaxy S III: 306 PPI

respect to brightness and color of the screen is very good . Something more vivid saturated colors, but with that point of exaggerated realism that is not too annoying and even if they can consider fooling, gives a touch to the images.

This is, without a doubt, the biggest difference between the LG Optimus G and its little brother the Nexus 4. The camera of this device, also manufactured by LG but under orders from Google, is dreadful. The lens cover made from Gorilla Glass makes you lose a lot of quality, and the Optimus G solves these problems.

For starters had a 8MP sensor with a 13 Megapixel, that although it is hardly the deciding factor, it starts to make a difference. We have to remember once again that the megapixels are not everything, and in fact from a certain amount, increase can backfire. Yet here we still play within the margin, and the quality increases. A secondary problem is usually light, which to cram too catchment cells in the same space, can cause problems, and if it appears that in low light conditions Optimus G camera introduces some noise, but we can talk better in this respect the Nexus 4.

Under decent light performance is very good. You notice that now we have a photographic lens, which although not the best quality, the fact of not being covered with Gorilla Glass helps tremendously, and the quality colors and sharpness increases dramatically.

Optimus G The camera is a very good camera, but not the best in Android terminal. We can expect good results, but under certain conditions it is easy for compromising image in quality.

If we said before the camera is the biggest difference between the Optimus G and the Nexus 4, the next sound is the selling point in this direction. Moreover, increased quality may be better in the Optimus G sound on camera, but as the latter most commonly used and is most striking visual.

The sound of Nexus 4 left much to be desired but this completely changes the Optimus G. If you like to use the phone for music, here the difference is more than noticeable, and the change is complete.

Fail some headphones, which although looks good at first glance, they are not best that accompany a smartphone. I have to clarify that I never would have thought to use headphones with this phone, I always use I bought mine apart, but lately we are finding that the quality here is increasing much.

Regarding the speaker, any problem. By having the small ridge that protects the back, this does not stick to flat surfaces on which we support, so you hear no problem.

Great job on the sound away from the LG with the Optimus G.

As with all high-end phone, paragraph here is complete. Of course we have WiFi, DLNA and Bluetooth 4.0, but we also NFC, MHL to use the microUSB port and HDMI output that can be loaded at a time, or GPS with GLONASS support, allowing locate them faster.

In fact something I’ve noticed using the LG Optimus G is that it has one of the fastest I’ve ever positions. When you open Google Maps for example, has a huge facility to position correctly. This is not something that I fijase as much because generally they all work pretty well already, but I have to say that this smartphone has caught my attention for good.

For the lovers microSD slot we have bad news, because the Optimus G does not have this extra memory stick slot, so we have to settle for the inner bearing.

I have to admit that the first battery tests I got a very big shock. With normal use was consuming at 10% of battery every hour, a genuine outrage, but in three or four cycles has started to stabilize.

phones tests in one or two weeks with this danger, which is that the battery usage is not easy to convey. As I say, fortunately after a few cycles the thing has improved dramatically, and now works much better, yielding very good.

actually change has been dramatic, from the concern to a great performance. This must also serve to not be impatient in the first cycles of a battery and let this stabilizes, for best results.

Global Experience and Conclusions

There is no doubt that the LG Optimus G is a great phone, but leaves a strange feeling. View as elsewhere in the world have the Optimus Pro and Optimus G GK while the rest just got the Optimus G is strange, especially when this phone is like the Nexus 4 except camera and sound, this costing € 299 free Google Play, and ensuring the fastest updates besides being a Nexus.

It’s a shame, because the Optimus G is a phone call, fast, light, very fluid and complete, but when you look at the picture global realize we could have something more by the Korean company.

Is the key to your success? Course will be on the operators, because if LG gets make good deals with these, it will be a bestseller. It has nothing to envy to other high-end devices recently introduced on the market in almost any aspect, and although it begins to be overcome in the multimedia section, competes with good weapons, but has to stand out in price to draw more attention .

It is understood how the user expected arrival of Optimus G now the market against its major competitors, but the gap is there, and if they know how it should work great on the windows, because it is a phone that does not fail, it works fine.

What is clear is that if you buy it, you can not regret it, because it has everything. Are there better? Of course, but at what price?
