The Plain Yucca is regarded as the area most irradiated by nuclear bombs in history. Today, this piece of the Nevada desert is still waiting to be “cleansed” of radioactive debris.
If it were not for the roads and the atmosphere, the surface of the Yucca Plain, also known as Yucca Flat, might well resemble that of our Moon. The plain is furrowed with huge craters from one end to another. Moreover, their land grow little more than stunted bushes wherever radiation permits. And the plain of Yucca is considered one of the most irradiated sites (if not the most) for nuclear testing . No less than 827 nuclear detonations documented. And not only outdoors, also underground and other indoor situations. The plain of Yucca has been punished many times to use our destructive potential. Today, and has been the site:
This is the plain of Yucca
The Plain Yucca is only a portion of the testing area of Nevada, which is divided into several parcels. It is part of a sedimentary basin in the desert, so the protection of the surrounding mountains and soft ground made it a perfect candidate for nuclear testing. Although Yucca is not alone in harboring nuclear testing itself has been which evidence has been probably the world . In fact, some of the most powerful tests were performed on this ground. Of the nearly thousand explosions, some 700 were underground tests. The huge nuclear explosion literally vaporizes the bedrock, shifting the land on which it is surrounded, so that the surface sinks. This produces the many craters that can be seen on the surface of the plain, decorating the plain as if it were a planet ravaged by meteorites.
The plain of Yucca has not been the only area that has suffered the detonation of nuclear tests. In the Nevada Test Site are several points detonation. But Yucca has been exploited many more nukes than other places together. Since 1997, the Plain of Yucca is the subject of an environmental recovery plan . At the end of the day, despite the nuclear tests, the place remains a fertile ecosystem, albeit desert, but is severely damaged by the effect of radiation. Some of the most polluted spots, radiation kills all organisms live close immediately, dropping their lethality and speed of their effects as we get away from the radioactive waste. The biggest problem is related to the strata beneath its surface, which have been greatly irradiated and can contaminate water sources that flow underground.
The Arabian nuclear tests
The plain of Yucca has witnessed an incredible amount of ideas to try things (and what not) do with a nuclear bomb. Since vacuum tests, towers, structures, power and effects on operators, including safety testing to nuclear disasters, this place has been the guinea pig army. Among other things, since 1951, the Plain of Yucca has witnessed the first failed test nuclear bomb in the world, in Buster operation. In 1957, the operation Plumbbob the largest nuclear device ever tested outdoors in the United States detonated (still well below the “Tsar Bomba” Russian, the most powerful ever tested). Also during this operation another 29 bombs causing a controversy that still stands today due to the adverse effects of radioactive winds is detonated. Effects that are still active, though.
The Sedan Crater, for example, is one of the objects visible from space due to a nuclear test.. It’s a huge hole with 390 meters in diameter and 100 deep provoked after volatilize 12 million tonnes bed with a bomb of 104 kilotons. This crater intended to demonstrate the possibility of using nuclear energy as creating lakes and landforms , which resulted in failure because of the danger of radioactive extension. As with all tests, the plain of Yucca has seen many failures. Baneberry In operation, a “small” underground bomb caused an unexpected reaction, freeing the medium radioactive clouds that came to affect 86 workers of the plain. The plain of Yucca saw its end as nuclear test in 1992. Five years later an action plan set out to recover the place, but today there are points “black” considered “sacrificed” because of the inability the cost and logistics of your treatment. Over time, the plain of Yucca recover from the brands that we once markings for some are symbols of progress and to others only scars of war, but in this case not kill anyone directly.
