This is my experience after 7 days with marshmallow Android 6.0

Android Marshmallow

A week came to light new versions of mobile operating system Google ago, Android 6.0 Marshmallow for previous Nexus devices to newly introduced Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P .

It is available via downloading system image so we decided to download and flash our Nexus 5 to view the differences and improvements over Lolipop and the latest Developer Preview. This new version does not leave anyone indifferent and that there are few new developments that entails.

Installation and Startup

This new version will arrive in format OTA update for Nexus devices and also for the later generations of the big brands (Huawei, Sony, Motorola, Samsung, etc) as we saw earlier.

In our case, we proceeded to the installation via flashing of the official image of Android 6.0, clean installation system, erasing all the terminal to avoid possible incompatibilities of installed applications above with the new version.

Once realized the process, que has remained the same since 2013 , the terminal takes about 15 minutes to make the first start, which for many is an eternity and it might seem that we have a case of bootloop, new logo by the way, but it is not. . Patience

First Impressions: more of the same is not it

Yes, that’s hard. First impressions once boots the operating system are a false passive aggressive attitude because aesthetically and in terms of operation the operating system Android 5.1.1 Lolipop appears to be.

This new version does not give a substantial jump in design or operation of the operating system, we did see the jump to Android 4.4 Android 5.0.

Marshmallow not go down in history as a version of hardware to extract more hidden potential as we saw in Lolipop and take advantage of the new machine in front of the Dalvik ART cuasiobsoleta.

However, just to go surfing giving us the system we account details and features that improve the user experience

Most innovations to improve safety

Marshmallow is a version that offers necessary safety improvements for the operating system. Not only allow Google to launch security patches independently of system upgrades, a point reflected in the system information and intends to fight threats como Stagefright , but also come at last, and natively support permission management by the user.

Surely many of you say, you already could do with my BRAND-MODEL mobile. But it is in this Marshmallow where it is natively integrated with the operating system.

In this way a user happens to be a passive entity that if you install an application must accept all the permissions that prompted the application, a user who will have power to decide what can be used or not an application.

That is, if Android most users act as desktop computers and clicking next, next and previous unread during installation, a user can now see what permissions an application requests and revoke use.

You can delete, post installation, permissions as are the use of camera, access to your calendar or any type of permit application need not have to function but the developer asks. There are tools like flashlights for mobile, only the LED light camera requesting more access to the camera and is something that can Marshmallow and control. From my point of view as a Power User Android is an interesting feature, but surely most Android users do not use it.

Other features that Google has been modified in order to improve safety is a phone that is connected via USB, connects default ‘Charge only’ mode, forcing the user to change the way if you want to access its contents.

Navigating deeper into the characteristics of Marshmallow, also we have a feature that prevents applications to meet our internal data device such as Wi-Fi MAC address or the Bluetooth now requiring permission types ACCESS-FINE-ACCESS or LOCATION-LOCATION COARSE to access that information.

Improved accessibility and use of everyday

Another of the new features of Android coming to improve ergonomics / accessibility of the system, ie ease in using different functions, avoiding extra steps or buttons to relocating them at hand. One example is the new unlock screen where we can access Google Now camera or directly.

Another example of this is the new styling and performance of copy and paste text. Now shows a popup with the ability to copy, cut, paste and share the selected text or an image.

Here we must also note that Google is weaving its network of services and also adds the possibility of translation text via Google Translate.

That is, do not have to copy the text, go to the website of Google Translate or application and paste the text to be translated, but directly from the menu that appears when you select it you can choose to translate.

Not that this is a feature that change our lives, but we will save steps when you copy and paste content or find the meaning of that little word.

Looping the curl and going a step further this sharing functionality has also been improved and is, according to Android detects your usage patterns, will offer the ability to share not only with a specific service, WhatsApp or read Telegram, for example but you’ll have direct access to shared directly with the user through the service rather than having to choose the service and then in the list of users and within that application.

With Android 6.0 have subtle improvements that will make you save a few minutes in your day to day without realizing

Following this line we also have, if only in English for now, functionality Now on Tap , which comes to launch a search on Google Now the information we have on the screen, so you could access information about movies or restaurants nearby if you’re having a conversation WhatsApp on it by simply letting down the Home button.

As we say, for now only It is available in English and although our first tests have been successful, we are looking forward in Spanish to get a more realistic idea. For now, we ask the wildcard public to try this feature.

Another interesting feature is the ability to use external memory either via microSD or USB (OTG connection) as internal memory and centralize there installing applications, data and photographs. It is a step beyond that what until now we could do, and that external environment is used literally as internal storage medium and not only certain types of data.

In our case, Nexus 5, we tested the functionality with a pendrive with microUSB connection. We see it as a solution for users who are running out of space and can use a microSD to expand, really, that space. Issue to consider: speed reading and writing and durability of this medium

Synthetic Performance applications and games

We have seen that the versions Developer Preview was on the line. Lolipop in terms of pure and simple performance, in fact in some ways was something behind (normal when dealing with non-final versions).

Now is the time to revisit these data and pass tests to the final version to compare one on one device. Initial evidence pointed to no more exprimiríamos hardware with this new version at those levels but thanks to the improved framework, management of multi-use RAM and yes we should see slight improvements in some sections.

As you can see the improvements as tested, are tiny and very similar to Lolipop results. Clearly, this version of Android brings news and features that are the great strength of Android 6.0, but the performance improvement is not remarkable.

Doze and increased or not in the range

Another major sections that were played in the presentation of Android 6.0 Marshmallow were improvements in autonomy and in particular talked about the Doze functionality.

Speaking in silver is a functionality that detects when the terminal is idle, with off for some time without performing any operation screen, and lowers the rate of updating application data.

 Doze 630x347 Android M

Google noticed an improvement in efficiency of up to 30% and use this week we were able to draw several conclusions.

  • It depends on your usage pattern of mobile, if you’re an active user who uses every moment to see notifications or play games, this functionality you hardly provide additional autonomy. However, if you make use of the terminal is less demanding start to see something more than autonomy.
  • This 30% improvement is the best and we have approached the weekend due at least we have used the terminal, but we have not reached such improvement. We have spent the day without reloading the terminal to endure day and little else.

Doze is an interesting feature that makes the terminal to stay longer in sleep mode. Organizes data update requests and manages in a row at longer time intervals, allowing the terminal to stay longer in state Sleep .

An interesting feature but if you’re a heavy user or Doze (or treze or catorze;)) will make notes improvement in autonomy, since the dwell time of the terminal is not going with you

And finally, Google itself that. has integrated support USB 3.1 type-C, that is, not only physically the connector will be easier to use, to be reversible, but allow transmission of higher power, up to 3 amps (standard cables).

Usb 3 1 04 Type C

This means that along with new hardware controller Charging could get loads faster.

Marshamallow is the way forward

Google has shown great improvements in this version and some that go beyond what we could try, such as the integration of native support fingerprint reader. Is another improvement in security, not only can serve as a means of unlocking the terminal but may be used to launch different applications or authenticate online payments via Pay Android, among other services.

Improvements in autonomy are always interesting, but in this case, is the first step of a long way to optimize the use of the battery at rest and is something most cases by far not notice too much.

Android Marshmallow 2

In this version also we have a new manager RAM memory that allows us to track what applications consume, but it is only as a tool for advanced users as well as new storage manager with a material design look very carefully

Now is the time for manufacturers to climb Marshmallow bandwagon, and while we have seen some manufacturers positioning (Huawei, Sony, Motorola, Samsung), still many for position on the matter. This is one battle that Apple has won the street and if Android wants further progress should resolve this chain in which Google is pulling the rest of manufacturers.

Hidden Features and surprises

We are looking forward to try a Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P to take advantage of all the built-in Android 6.0 features, so you know xatakeros, you will be the first to be informed as soon when we have thoroughly tested.

But we have met with features available in development versions that have been hidden or not to have reached mature enough to the launch or are functions that have not been explained in depth and certainly more than any of you want to try.

Android 6.0 There are several and I will explain the this week both video and text. These include the option of using microSD USB as an internal storage memory or uninstall preinstalled applications without resorting to root either mode configuration user interface or a dark theme
