Android Auto and carplay reach Spain massively in the new Volkswagen Touran.
Volkswagen presented, the hand of his renewed family minivan, the Touran, the new technological contribution to the automotive sector whose cornerstones are based on the integration of the two main actors of the market for mobile operating systems for the car: Android and carplay .
In this sense, one of the key points is that both systems Volkswagen live in convenience with self-Connect system Volkswagen App, so you do not have to choose between one or another, from the outset, and depending on the phone you connect, will be fully integrated . App-Connect, which until now included only MirrorLink, acts as a mirror and reflects smartphone interface directly on the screen radio navigation when you connect your phone via cable into a USB port on the Touran.
For now though Car and Play can operate completely wirelessly, integration with the new Touran is made via USB cable, so that the system, the same as Android Auto, is fully functional and easy: just connect the terminal and automatically the dashboard display will change to the interface of the two systems, all, as I say, in coexistence with proprietary system of Volkswagen integrates such interesting things as streetview, search for POIs in real time over baratas- -gasolineras or synchronization with the GoPro to see the rear of the vehicle.
However, the issue center, and the most interesting point of this call has been Volkswagen Car Auto Play and Android. For Apple, Android comparatively, its operation is much simpler, but its possibilities are also more limited.
For example, integration with third-party apps for Apple absent beyond Spotify. It is true that this is the fault on the part of developers, but the truth is that the native Android compatibility with some applications such as Auto Telegram or WhatsApp is a big plus, leaving Apple version limited to messages and applications -not all native System -.
As another example, Car Play only works so far, with Apple maps. Knowing that there are many good alternatives in the store, such as Google Maps application itself, this is a drawback rather to consider, because at first greatly limits the potential and functionality integration with Apple’s smartphones. In general, the performance of both versions is just right, and it is appreciated that in a family vehicle like the Touran, which has a very specific audience, include both the versatility of the system.
If we look at the bondadades of both systems, in the case of Android home screen only displays time card information or latest actions made with for example the latest phone calls or missing-, and direct access to Google Maps and Google Play Music, moment by the company, nothing more. Just do as I say the highlight of android auto is its compatibility with 41 applications, a very interesting kindness that increases the chances of the product.
In the case of carplay Apple, the system integrates some of iPhone features: Phone, News, Maps and Music , plus some Podcast and Audiobooks and third as Spotify. But little else. Yes, the functionality of those applications is fully integrated with the system, and in conjunction with Siri speed and versatility of it makes the dashboard in a sort of iPad with great potential for the future.
In general, both systems are a good starting point, in the case of Android, rather than Apple. However, without a thorough test in a real environment I would not dare to announce which of the two is the most versatile and powerful long term, but left me one thing clear: the future of the experience of our cars through the smartphones.
