    Renfe Train

Renfe will start this Monday, in Asturias, the first tests of a traction rail with liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Europe and the first to be performed in the world in the segment of travelers.

The minister of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda, Álvaro Nadal, and his counterpart from public works, Iñigo Serna attend the project presentation, which brings Gas Natural Fenosa and Enagás.

The ministers will travel in a train prototype, which will provide service on the commuter line width metric (Feve) Baíña-Collanzo, between the stations of Mieres Near (Mieres Basque) and Figaredo.

The train will leave the station of Mieres at 11.28 hours with authorities and press board and, after a journey of 5 minutes of duration, the project will be presented to the attendees in the station of Mieres Basque.

The objective of the pilot tests, that will last for four months, is verify the feasibility of a solution with potential environmental and economic advantages for the traffics, which are being developed with diesel traction.

It will analyze the feasibility of the adaptation of rail vehicles for operation with engines and tanks of LNG and the corresponding analysis of technical, legal, economic, and environmental for the Spanish railway network and the european commission.

The project, coordinated by the Institut Cerdà and the addition ARMF as an integrator rail and Bureau Veritas as the company specializing in inspection and certification, is framed in the strategy of momentum of the Vehicle with Alternative Energy (SEE) in Spain 2014-2020.

The train on which the tests are performed, in a stretch of about 20 kilometres between the station of Trubia and Baiña with extension to Figaredo, is a self-propelled narrow-gauge that has been withdrawn machinery diesel to build another LNG, in addition to a special deposit for the new fuel.

The convoy will also feature a traction unit driven by diesel, what allow to compare the results of a and other technology.

this test track to make conclusions about technical requirements of space, weight, cooling, and autonomy for the traction of natural gas, in addition to other considerations and variables comparative emissions and economy of operation.

Among the advantages of the use of natural gas, highlights the reducing emissions of oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulfur, carbon monoxide, and particles, in addition to decreasing the noise pollution.

From the economic point of view, can contribute to reduce operating costs with a best-case scenario of prices general with respect to petroleum derived fuels, reduce dependence on energy from this source and be offered as an alternative to the investment in electrification of sections not electrified.

Spain has a long experience in the management of LNG and its logistics will be studied in the Ministries of Energy and Development, under the eu directives, which can ensure the security of supply for this potential market.
