Fortnite - The End: The black hole hides a mini-game with the Konami code
We were able to experience first hand the most controversial ever released SoC Qualcomm, Snapdragon 810, and give you our first impressions.
It is impossible to speak of Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 without regard to the controversy created by statements from Samsung in ensuring that the SoC Californians overheats. Samsung loss as a customer is a blow for the company, but what is there in these statements? In addition to the problems that caused the controversy we test the performance of your CPU and GPU.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 is one of the SoC that has cost at Qualcomm design in recent years, according to officials who attended us, for its new architecture abandoning Krait implemented recently in the Snapdragon 805. The key point of this new SoC is your CPU consists of two new graduates ARM architecture Cortex A57 and A53 . The quadcore A57 has a nominal clock speed of 1.95 GHz and the quadcore A53 to 1.55 Ghz.
Like the rest of CPU Big.little, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 can offer 8 cores simultaneously the operating system and applications, depending on the task manager to deploy each process in a given Cortex.
Specifications Qualcomm Snapdragon 810
- CPU : 4x Cortex A57 R1P1 @ 1.95GHz + 4x Cortex A53 @ 1.55GHz – 2MB L2 cache
- memory controller : 2x 32-bit @ 1.55 GHz LPDDR4 (24.8GB / s)
- GPU : Adreno 430 @ 600MHz
- Manufacturing process : TSMC 20nm
Qualcomm followed the guidelines of the latest SoC launched in recent years. Designed with a CPU 4 + 4 Big.little , ie four Cortex A57 for tasks that require high power performance and four Cortex A53 for tasks that do not require much power, offering lower consumption.
Outside the CPU and GPU are significant advances in the modem the SoC of which I will write on another article.
Although the raw performance of a CPU increasingly is becoming more irrelevant cup addressing energy efficiency and capabilities of your modem, we must check its performance to know if the jump to the new architecture Cortex A57 is a sufficient and differential value compared to the previous generation, and last, with Krait architecture.
I had just an hour available to run all the benchmark in the tablet prototype we left Qualcomm . We had trouble running the PC Mark as me and the other colleagues did not let us down a bug in the application.
In all benchmark compare with the results of Google Nexus 5 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 ), Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801) and the Apple iPhone 6 (Apple A8) to compare against previous generations with Krait architecture and is currently the best System on Chip Market . in my opinion (A8)
started by Geekbench 3, a too synthetic benchmark and not provides interesting data too as it focuses more on the theoretical yield in the real, as Antutu, but it gives a clear indication of the new architecture and performance difference. Performance Multi Core is expected and is among the fastest SoC world
Although not CPU benchmarks, its performance is closely related and give us perspective of its performance daily activities against the CPU competition. In this benchmark the Snapdragon 810 shows its power, surpassing the limitations of past architecture showing no major differences to overcome a given clock speed (2GHz +). Manages to be at the performance of the most powerful tablets on the market such as Google Nexus 9 and the iPad Air 2
The Google Octane v2 Snapdragon 810 is at the level of the best SoC market, but also shows a huge advantage despite being a SoC that has just been laid against those who have done a few months ago as the A8. . Still very good score
BaseMark usually one of my benchmark reference. But when testing prototype tablet Snapdragon observed 810 very mixed results . Or the 810 showed one of the best or worst results among the processors of the past two years. The benchmark memory shows an overinflated number that does not correspond to the actual performance of RAM and result in System and Web is very poor.
I’m sure it’s problem of implementation the proofer and that the result in our smartphones will be much higher. Yet we can already see the beast that is in the graphic, at least in the synthetic benchmark.
The performance of GPU is currently one of the key points performance of a SoC, especially if we consider the trend to include larger and larger resolutions. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 first introduced the Adreno 430, the latest iteration of the great family of graphics chips Qualcomm Adreno 400.
According to the representative of Qualcomm in the previous talk, this new GPU has a yield 30% higher than the Adreno 420 keeping the clock speed of 600 Mghz. They could not give more details about the architecture or other details of the graphics chip. But thanks to the benchmarks we know and quantify the improvement in the latter model, especially architecture.
He assured me that the Adreno 430 was not a simple evolution of the Adreno 420. From this premise and benchmarks conclude that there is a major change in architecture. Although we can not know for sure because Qualcomm refuses to give details.
No I could try many games or benchmarks because shortly after I arranged. So I tried the most famous and the most experience I had
3D Mark is a classic, especially what is on PC, but it is becoming more popular determining performance GPU everyday applications for mobile SoC. As I said, Qualcomm gave reference to a 30% increase over the Adreno 420, but in several test improvement is much greater. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 has one of the best GPU for mobile devices in the world.
I worry about the performance and not know Physics explanation. Although not decisive in today’s mobile games, is quite important performance in that paragraph and each time it will be more games with Unreal Engine 4 for example.
Tried famous benchmarks that give us a result as close as possible to run a game high requirements our device. Keep in mind that the screen 810 Snapdragon MDP / T tablet was 4K resolution, so we are not comparing apples to apples. But surprisingly, the Adreno 430 is capable of moving a 4K display more than 10 fps
The Off Screen test can begin to compare apples to apples. And the Adreno 430 is positioned as one of the most powerful graphics chip market for smartphone. Just tablets like the iPad Air 2 or Google Nexus September outgrow
The story is repeated with the benchmark OnScreen. I’ve done out of curiosity, since it is not a fair comparison. But we glimpse how far we have to have 4K screens in our smartphones and tablets with adequate performance
Possible overheating and Thermal Trottling
This is the aspect most talked from Qualcomm announced that a large manufacturer would cease to be his client and Samsung Exynos announced its range 7 to 14nm manufacturing process. Samsung was the first to announce that 810 Snapdragon got very hot.
Under this premise and taking advantage of the little remaining time I had with the test unit 810 Snapdragon MDP / T decided to run multiple Antutu and check the result for each iteration. He could also play the back where the SoC stood for the heat released (although did not have a laser thermometer, so it was not valid measurement, but I could get an idea) and check if the result remained or was reduced ( lowering speed to maintain an acceptable temperature)
The results speak for themselves . But keep in mind that it was a test prototype, had already implemented many benchmarks and the screen was 4K. Still no appreciable thermal trottling. The prototype had a case quite thick aluminum, so I do not have much hope that is resolved in the implementation of smartphones to install it.
Much less is a final judgment, would have to run tests Thermometer with a device in production and LG G2 Flex. But there are indications that the problem can be reported Samsung real
There are several blogs that have indicated that the Snapdragon 810 is heated less than the 801 using a graph Qualcomm itself gave us the first day in their offices. I do not think it’s a clear objective evidence of reality , even when temperature may be maintained with a drastic reduction in clock speed of the CPU.
We can not judge yet Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, but if we can make some considerations.
From what little I could test the SoC not gave off one Skin Device excessive temperature, but can be due to thermal trottling, something I have to prove in a controlled several days on a device distribution environment.
The CPU performance is within expectations with 4 cores A57 at that speed, even if some somewhat strange result, which may be due to the benchmarks or the Android version. Performance is more than adequate and I think Qualcomm has managed to maximize it without compromising the energy efficiency of your chip and implementation Big.little.
In GPU, the Adreno 430 performs very well, just what we would expect , and has even exceeded my expectations in several benchmarks. Still, I crave something ridiculous that Qualcomm persists in testing their SoC with a 4K display when the GPU Adreno 430 GPU like other mobile market is far from providing an adequate return to that resolution .
We have to wait until we can prove the first devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, with the Exynos range 7 and compared with the current leader, the A8 / X from Apple. I believe that Qualcomm has to show that its SoC is competent, which had been undisputed until very recently being industry leader to onset of A7 and A8 of the latter and controversial Apple launch its new architecture with Snapdragon 810.
Qualcomm’s leadership is not only CPU and GPU, competition is far from being able to offer all the features of your modem , but if True, the Snapdragon 810 gives performance issues will be a major stumbling block for Android flagships first half of the year
