    mobile Phone battery

A group of researchers from the University of Washington has invented a a mobile phone that works without battery, and collected the few microwatios of power that requires radio signals or the light environment.

Among the different tests that have been conducted with the device, the computer did calls Skype, which shows that the prototype is made of commercial components available can receive and transmit voice and communicate with a base station.

The new technology is detailed in an article published in the July 1 in Proceedings of the Association for Computing Machinery on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies. “We have built what we believe is the first mobile phone that consumes a nearly zero-energy”, said in a statement co-author Shyam Gollakota, associate professor of the School’s Paul G. Allen Computer Science and Engineering at the UW.

“To achieve the extremely low consumption of energy needed to operate a phone by the collection of energy from the environment, we had to rethink the way in which these devices are designed”.

The team of scientists and electrical engineers from UW eliminated a step, high energy requirement in the majority of transmissions, cellular modern, the convert analog signals that transmit the sound data digitales that a phone can understand. This process consumes so much energy that it has been impossible to design a phone that you can trust in sources of environmental energy.

on the other hand, the mobile phone without battery take the small vibrations in the microphone or the speaker that are produced when a person is talking on a phone or listening to a call.

An antenna connected to those components converts that movement into changes in the radio signal is a standard analogue broadcast by a cellular base station. This process encodes essentially the speech patterns in the radio signals reflected in a way that does not use almost no energy.

To transmit voice, the phone uses vibrations from the device microphone to encode voice patterns in the reflected signals. To receive voice, convert radio signals encoded into vibrations of sound that are captured by the phone’s speaker. In the prototype device, the user presses a button to switch between these two modes of “transmission” and “hear”.

The phone without a battery still requires a small amount of energy to perform some operations. The prototype has a budget of power 3.5 microwatios.

The researchers from the University of Washington demonstrated how to collect this small amount of energy from two different sources. In one case, the prototype of the mobile phone without battery can work with the energy of radio signals environmental transmitted by a base station up to 10 metres away. On the other, using the energy collected from the ambient light with a tiny solar cell, about the size of a grain of rice, the device was able to communicate with a base station that was more than 15 metres of distance.
